Derrick leaned his chair back on two legs and stretched, giving his diaphragm as much room as it needed to power his laughter.

“I can show you the bruises.”

He flapped away my offer.

My boss was clothing hanging off skin hanging off bones.

The first time I saw him, I thought he must have lost 600 pounds in the weeks leading up to my arrival.

I thought maybe cancer, but Abby said he’d looked like a cadaver ever since she started working for him some ten years ago.

I tried to stem our boss’s delight by continuing my report. “The good news is: I saved our client’s tires.”

“Whoo-hoo.” Derrick shook his head as his laughter wound down, the skin around his neck applauding. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard an explanation for failure that was quite so entertaining.”

“Hey!” Failure? Seriously? “I stopped him from vandalizing the car.”

Derrick righted his chair. “You let him get away.”

“Our client hired us to safeguard his tires, and they’re in pristine condition.”

“‘Pristine’? Where’d you say you got your criminal justice degree, Harvard?”

“Dorchester. Look, I stopped the guy. After two nights getting away scot free, he’s got to be spooked.”

“Unless he’s not. How do I justify paying you another night to our client when we’re not sure?” He tapped his desk with a crooked finger. “There comes a point when it’s cheaper to just get a new set of wheels.”

“Maybe one time, but not if it happens again night after night.”

“I brought you on because you’re experienced.”

“And your gamble paid off. I’ve got a clue.”

His face puckered. “A clue?”

I reached down into the bag next to my chair, withdrew my trophy, and tossed it onto Derrick’s desk. “I got his fucking leash.”
